You won't have to re-buy games: Nintendo president confirms backwards compatibility in Switch 2

There have already been a huge number of rumours, leaks and insights about Nintendo's new console, which is supposedly going to be called Switch 2. As one of the most frequent theses sounded that the new device will have backwards compatibility, which will allow to run the entire library of games for the current version of Switch.

Here's What We Know

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the company will indeed ensure that users will be able to run all games from the past model on Switch 2.

At the Corporate Governance Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch [game] software will also be available to play on the Switch successor. Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the Nintendo Switch successor. Additional information about the Switch Successor, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.

Surprisingly, the company is sharing this kind of information before it has even officially unveiled the new console. This is expected to happen before 31 March 2025, but as we previously reported, analysts don't think a presentation before the end of this year is possible.
