What could possibly go wrong? Netflix relies entirely on generative AI to develop video games

At the end of October it became known that Netflix closes its AAA studio Team Blue, which employed gaming industry veterans, which worked for only two years and was supposed to produce big-budget video games, but did not manage to create any.

The company did not comment on the reasons for the closure of the studio, but now everything has become clear.

Here's What We Know

Netflix is not giving up on conquering the gaming market, but decided to execute its plans in the most risky way possible and in a controversial way.

Mike Verdu, formerly the head of Netflix Games, has been promoted to vice president of generative AI for game development at Netflix. He said on his LinkedIn page that the company will rely entirely on generative AI to develop new projects, which Verdu believes will "increase development speed and unlock truly new game experiences that will surprise, delight and inspire players."

Mike Verdu is convinced that generative AI is a new opportunity not only for Netflix, but for the entire industry, believing that there is huge potential in this technology.

Well, we'd like to see how generative AI will replace the team of talented and experienced game designers and what ideas, besides endless procedural generation, it will be able to implement. Netflix isn't the first company to bet on AI, and won't be the first to fail.
