Pentagon develops scanner to detect brain injuries in combat zone

The US Department of Defence has awarded Sense Neuro Diagnostics a $2 million contract to identify opportunities to diagnose brain injuries on the front line.

Here's What We Know

Sense Neuro Diagnostics has developed the innovative NeuroHawk helmet, which can quickly scan the brain to detect haemorrhages. The technology is aimed at improving the diagnosis of trauma, which has been a serious problem for the military for the past 20 years.

The NeuroHawk provides fast, non-invasive scanning and monitoring in seconds, providing medical professionals with accurate data to make quick treatment decisions. This can help reduce the risk of re-injury and improve treatment outcomes.

The first clinical trial is scheduled for June 2025. Initially, the research will focus on testing the system's functions and effectiveness under stressful conditions.

The project received $2.43 million in funding from the Pentagon's Medical Research Program in 2021.

"NeuroHawk is designed to be used in the field, allowing for rapid detection and monitoring of brain injuries. Thanks to the Pentagon's support, we are ready to introduce life-saving technologies," said Jeff Klass, CEO of the company.
