Iran plans to triple its defence budget due to inability to repel Israeli attacks
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced that the country's military budget would be "increased by almost 200 percent".
Here's What We Know
Previously, Iran's military budget was $10.3 billion, which is significantly less than that of other countries in the region. For example, Saudi Arabia allocates about $70 billion and Turkey about $40 billion).
The plan is part of a budget proposal submitted to parliament, which lawmakers are expected to finalise early next year.
Iran has a military force of 610,000 soldiers and 350,000 reservists, totalling almost 960,000 troops. This is one of the largest military forces in the Middle East.
Iran has also managed to develop outdated aerospace and missile technologies under the pressure of sanctions for violating international law and terrorism. For example, long-range precision-guided missiles and drones.
