UPS will test inductive car charging in Detroit
UPS, one of the world's largest logistics companies, is organising a trial of a wireless electric vehicle charging system by Israeli company Electreon at its depot in Detroit, Michigan. The Xos Stepvan truck will be used in the experiment.
Here's What We Know
The project is funded by the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform (MMFP), which provided $200,000. Electreon will integrate a wireless charging system into the Xos truck and install a stationary charging system at one of the UPS depots. The charging system will operate overnight, but the number of stations and their capacity is not yet known.
The aim of the project is to reduce the overall cost of operating a fleet of electric vehicles by minimising downtime.
It is worth noting that the project is a continuation of the launch of the first US "electric road" Electreon in Detroit. It works by using inductive coils to charge cars while travelling.
