The electric Jaguar XJ, which was cancelled in 2021, has been shown for the first time in finished form

Social network X (aka Twitter) published a photo of the electric Jaguar XJ, which was supposed to be the new flagship of the British brand in the era of electric cars. However, the project was cancelled in 2021.

Apparently, the design of Jaguar XJ was inspired by the electric crossover Jaguar I-Pace. But it kept the traditional proportions of the sedan. Interestingly, the profile of the electric XJ is similar to the future Jaguar GT, a model that will symbolise the brand's relaunch in 2026. This "successor" of the XJ will be a direct competitor to the Porsche Taycan with a price above 100 thousand euros.

Why did Jaguar abandon the electric XJ?

The project of the electric XJ started in 2019, after which the prototypes were repeatedly spotted during road tests. Two years later, the company revised its strategy and decided that this model did not fit the vision of the renewed brand. Official photos were never shown at that time. However, Autocar designers created an unofficial rendering (image below the header of this article) that was close to what we've only seen now.

Instead, Jaguar has moved its deadline for switching to electric cars from 2025 to 2026. The concept will be unveiled in the coming weeks, setting a new course for the brand.

What's next.

The GT will be the first of three electric Jaguar models on the JEA platform, which is designed specifically for electric cars. A large luxury sedan and SUV are also expected before 2030.
