Peru will become the new buyer of Korean K2 tanks, with more than 150 T-55s in its arsenal

The South Korean corporation Hyundai Rotem has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Peru, which provides for the supply of K2 main battle tanks and K808 infantry fighting vehicles as part of the Peruvian Armed Forces modernisation programme.

The agreement between Peru and South Korea was signed in Lima, the capital of Peru, at a ceremony attended by representatives of the military and political leadership of both countries, Army Recognition reports. As part of the contract, Peru plans to receive K2ME tanks adapted for use in hot climates.

The agreement, signed on 16 November, is of a general nature and defines the scope and scale of the armoured vehicle supply programme for the Peruvian army, but the exact figures are not disclosed.

The next stage will be the conclusion of detailed contracts that will specify delivery dates, costs, maintenance and training conditions.

It is emphasised that the South Korean government actively contributed to the conclusion of this agreement by initiating the promotion of its armoured vehicles to a new market.

According to The Military Balance 2024, the Peruvian Armed Forces have 165 T-55 tanks, of which 75 are in storage, as well as 96 AMX-13 light tanks, some of which are equipped with the Cornet ATGM. In addition, the Peruvian military has 295 armoured personnel carriers of various types, including 120 M113s and 95 wheeled reconnaissance armoured vehicles, including 30 BRDM-2s.
