A group of Canadian news companies, including the Toronto Star, CBC, and Globe and Mail, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.

Here's What We Know

They accuse the ChatGPT developer of copyright infringement and illegal use of content for training speech models.

The companies demand monetary compensation and a ban on the use of their material. The lawsuit states that the content was created "at considerable effort and expense" and that OpenAI "misappropriated the intellectual property without consent".

OpenAI is also facing copyright claims from The New York Times, New York Daily News, YouTube creators and authors, including comedian Sarah Silverman.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded that their models are based on "publicly available data" and are subject to fair use. The company also said it was working with publishers to display and attribute their content.
