Netherlands hands over two minesweepers to Ukraine: Ukrainian sailors have already completed training
The Netherlands officially hands over two Alkmaar-class minesweepers to Ukraine - Zr.Ms. Vlaardingen (M863 ) and Zr.Ms. Makkum (M857). These ships, which will be retired from the Royal Netherlands Navy in 2024, will enhance Ukraine's ability to conduct mine action operations. Intensive training was conducted to prepare the crew, which was successfully completed by 35 Ukrainian sailors.
Here's What We Know
The transfer of the minesweepers is part of international support for Ukraine amid the war with Russia. The ships are equipped with modern equipment for searching for and disposing of sea mines, which is especially important for de-mining the Black Sea.
The training of the Ukrainian military took place over two months on board the Zr.Ms. Makkum, where the sailors worked together with the Dutch crew. NATO instructors and technical staff provided an in-depth look at the technical and operational aspects of the ships. Separately, technicians were trained in Belgium to maintain the minesweeper systems.
Why It Matters
The support of the Netherlands demonstrates solidarity with Ukraine and a desire to strengthen its ability to defend its maritime borders. Given the difficult situation in the Black Sea, mine clearance is becoming one of the key tasks of the post-war period. The transfer of these ships will allow Ukraine to more effectively counter threats at sea and ensure the safety of navigation.
This is also an example of active cooperation between Ukraine and NATO, which enhances the training of the Ukrainian military to use modern technologies in naval affairs.
