OpenAI has partnered with defence startup Anduril Industries to develop artificial intelligence for the Pentagon. The partnership is described as a method to protect US military personnel and counter Chinese artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
The companies plan to integrate OpenAI models, such as the GPT-4o and OpenAI o1, with Anduril systems to improve the US military's defence against unmanned enemy systems. The partnership comes after OpenAI softened its stance on the military use of its models.
An OpenAI spokesperson said that the deal is in line with the company's rules as it focuses on defence against unmanned threats and does not cover other uses. The partnership will focus on improving technology to detect and shoot down drones that threaten the U.S. military and its allies.
The Pentagon already uses the Anduril Roadrunner drone interceptor to combat small drones on battlefields around the world.
