Syrian rebels against the Assad regime have seized two launchers and one transport and reloading vehicle of the BM-30 Smerch multiple launch rocket system.

Here's What We Know

One 9A52-2 launcher was seized in the village of Al-Safirah, southeast of Aleppo. This combat vehicle was damaged, including the driver's cab and a broken front axle wheel. Eight rockets are also visible in the video.

Another 9A52-2, along with a 9T234-2 transport and loading vehicle, were abandoned by Assad's forces in the village of Hanaser, located near the town of al-Safirah.

The poor quality of the video does not allow us to accurately assess the condition of the combat vehicles and the availability of ammunition. However, it is worth noting that BM-30 Smerch entered service in the Syrian Arab Republic only after the outbreak of the civil war.

It is known that a small number of Smerchs were transferred to the Assad regime from Russian arsenals. The first evidence of the use of these MLRS in the form of 9M55K missile fragments was found in the settlements of Kfar Zita and Al-Tah north of Hama in early 2014.

In addition, Syrian rebels had earlier captured the latest Russian radar station 48Y6-K1 Podlet-K1. This station was discovered during the fighting for the city of Hama, which is controlled by Assad's forces. The radar is designed to work with Russian S-400 and S-300PMU-2 air defence systems.
