Google has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model GenCast, designed to forecast weather more accurately.

Here's What We Know

GenCast is an artificial intelligence model that provides more accurate weather forecasts. It has outperformed the current ECMWF ENS system in forecasts for up to 25 days. Details of the model were published in the journal Nature.

GenCast uses a model similar to those used for imaging, but adapted to forecast the weather on Earth. It was trained using 40 years of historical meteorological data.

In tests, GenCast was 97.2% accurate compared to ECMWF ENS, up to 99.8% more accurate for forecasts of 36 hours or more. The model also predicted the path of Typhoon Hagibis by comparing predictions with real data.

Google has released GenCast as an open model, planning further collaboration with meteorological agencies to improve forecasts in the future.
