The Ford Mustang GTD has officially been announced as the fastest American car at the Nürburgring
The Ford Mustang GTD covered the 20.7 kilometres (12.9 miles) Nordschleife in 6min 57.685sec. This achievement put the Mustang on the list of the world's fastest production sports cars, and also made it the first American car to break the seven-minute barrier at the legendary race track in Germany.

The record-breaking run took place back on 7 August, but Ford kept it a secret until almost the end of the year. At the wheel was experienced Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Muller.

Blue Oval promises to publish a video of the full lap later. For now, the company is offering a 14-minute documentary showing the challenges of going faster than seven minutes around the Nordschleife. The video contains some in-car footage, including a sprint down the Nürburgring straight where the GTD reached 187 mph (300.9 km/h).
The Mustang GTD equalled the Porsche 918 Spyder in terms of lap times. However, Ford is still far from claiming the title of fastest front-engined production car. It currently belongs to the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which ran a 6:43.61 in 2020, while the all-time Nürburgring record for production cars belongs to the Mercedes-AMG One at 6:29.09.
What's next
Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley said the Mustang GTD has even more potential. The company is planning new races in 2025, and will probably try to set even better times.
