Microsoft is saving the environment and building data centres with new closed-loop cooling technology
Not so long ago we reported that according to scientists' data, during the processing of 10-50 requests in ChatGPT and other similar AI, up to two litres of water are needed to cool servers, although previously it was assumed that only half a litre was enough for these purposes. This trend could lead to a real ecological disaster.
Microsoft is seriously concerned about the problem and is doing everything possible to reduce its negative impact on the Earth's climate.
Here's What We Know
Microsoft is commissioning a new type of data centre that will use closed-loop cooling. The project stipulates that when a centre is built, liquid is pumped into its pipes once and then circulates to cool servers and chips. Since such facilities are often built in arid regions, such as Arizona or Texas, where water is a problem, this technology is particularly relevant.
In the past fiscal year (ended 30 June 2024), Microsoft invested more than $50 billion in capital expenditure, of which most of it was spent on building new data centres. This year the company intends to spend even more, but the complexes with new closed-loop cooling technology won't be operational until 2026.
