Congressmen demand a report on the consequences of withdrawing support for Ukraine
US lawmakers want to assess the impact of Ukraine's potential defeat on US national security interests, including possible further aggression from Russia, China, Iran and the DPRK.
Here's What We Know
Lawmakers are pushing for the report to be attached to the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA-2025), which the House is expected to vote on Wednesday. President-elect Trump said Ukraine should "probably" prepare for a reduction in US military aid when he takes office.
Titled "Assessment of the Likely Course of the War in Ukraine," the legislation instructs various intelligence agencies to submit a report assessing the course of Ukraine's defensive war against Russia, the impact of US assistance, and the implications for America's adversaries.
Details of the report should include the ability of the Ukrainian military to defend itself against Russian aggression if the US continues or ends its military and economic support; and if the US maintains or withdraws permission to use the long-range missiles it has provided to strike deep into Russia.
The lawmakers also want the intelligence chiefs to assess the implications of a potential defeat of Ukraine by Russia for US national security interests, including potential further aggression by Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
The report is to be submitted in unclassified form, but may have a classified appendix, and is to be sent to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, as well as the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Relations, and Appropriations Committees.
