The legendary Ford Escort RS Mk1 has been brought back into production in the UK
Engineers from Boreham Motorworks worked on the project and received official permission from Ford Motor to use the Escort name and logo of the American brand.
Here's What We Know
This car is not a restomod built on an old platform. Boreham Motorworks has created an all-new body using digital models and modern engineering. Each model will be assigned a chassis number, continuing the original production run.
The design is based on the Escort RS two-door body, which was previously produced in Essex before the factory closed in 1975. Engineers added stiffeners, widened the wheel arches, and redesigned the rear suspension.
Engines and technical features:
The modern Escort Mk1 RS would receive two powertrain options:
- Modified Twin Cam: the volume was increased from 1.6 to 1.8 litres, carburettors were replaced by an injector system. Power increased by 73 hp to 182 hp. Transmission is the original 4-speed.
- Modern 2.1-litre engine: 296 hp, revs up to 10,000 rpm, forged crankshaft and connecting rods, and 5-speed transmission with short ratios.
The car has coilovers, an automatic traction differential and retains an authentic driving experience without ABS, ESP or power steering.
Retro design with a modern approach
Wayne Burgess, former head of Jaguar SVR, was responsible for the design. The chrome bumpers have been removed to create a sportier look, while the LED headlights have been styled to resemble the cross-shaped tape used at the time to prevent the headlight housings from collapsing.
The interior retains key elements of the original - the six-dial instrument cluster and centre air vents. At the same time, modern features have been added: Apple CarPlay, climate control and new switches.
Limited Edition
The public premiere of the Boreham Ford Escort Mk1 RS is scheduled for the summer of 2025, with production starting in the autumn. Only 150 examples will be produced, available on pre-order. The price starts at £295,000 (€357,088 or $374,630).
