Meta has asked the California Attorney General to block OpenAI's planned transition from a non-profit organisation to a for-profit organisation.

Here's What We Know

In the letter, Meta argues that OpenAI should not be allowed to use assets established as a charitable organisation for personal gain. Meta supports the efforts of Ilon Musk, who also opposes the transition. Musk, a former co-founder of OpenAI, has filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging that it puts profit above the public good.

Meta believes that OpenAI's behaviour could have serious consequences for Silicon Valley and set a dangerous precedent by allowing startups to enjoy the benefits of non-profit status until they become profitable. OpenAI, for its part, says that any potential changes to the company's structure will be to ensure its mission and continued work in the public interest.
