South Korean company Hanwha Aerospace plans to build a plant for the production of K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery systems in Romania.

Here's What We Know

Hanwha Aerospace Romania already has a branch in Romania, which is searching for partners and preparing for cooperation with local defence companies. The company said that the new plant will produce K9 Thunder for the Romanian army and for export orders.

This was reported by European Security Defence.

Construction of the first plant is due to begin in 2025. This step, according to Hanwha representatives, is part of a strategy to strengthen cooperation with Romania, which should be beneficial for both countries.

Romania is also holding tenders for a new main battle tank and an infantry fighting vehicle. Hanwha Aerospace is also participating in these projects with its K2 Black Panther tank and AS-21 Redback infantry fighting vehicle.

According to the company, the AS-21 Redback model can become the basis for the creation of a new infantry fighting vehicle adapted to the needs of the Romanian army, subject to close cooperation with the local defence industry.
