Gearbox Software developers have decided to change the tone of the upcoming Borderlands 4 game, reducing the amount of toilet humour that was characteristic of the previous instalments of the series. Narrative director Sam Winkler said that he wanted to avoid excessive vulgarity and focus on more mature humour.

Here's What We Know

In the previous Borderlands games, humour was often based on vulgar jokes, which was not always received positively by players. Winkler noted that in Borderlands 4, the team aims to avoid repeating this mistake by focusing on better and more appropriate humour. He also emphasised that he will not allow the use of modern internet memes, such as "skibidi", in the game to avoid rapid obsolescence of the content.

This approach demonstrates the developers' desire to adapt to changes in culture and player preferences by offering more mature and thoughtful content. It is expected that Borderlands 4 will retain the series' signature style, but with a more balanced approach to humour and narrative.

Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Gearbox recently unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Borderlands 4.
