Sony has announced an expanded collaboration with AMD to bring new artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to games through an initiative called Project Amethyst. This strategic agreement aims to significantly improve the graphics and gaming experience on PlayStation consoles as well as other platforms.

Here's What We Know

As part of Project Amethyst, a team led by PS5 architect Mark Cerny plans to develop an optimised architecture for machine learning. This will include the creation of high-quality convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can be used to improve graphics in video games. Cerny noted that the technologies developed as part of this project will not be exclusive to PlayStation, but can be applied to PCs and other consoles.

An important part of the initiative is the desire to "democratise" the use of machine learning in video games, which will allow developers to integrate these technologies more easily into their projects. This opens up new opportunities to improve visual effects, such as ray tracing, which will provide even more realism in the gameplay.

At this point, the results of the collaboration between Sony and AMD may not be immediately apparent. Cerny warned that the development of new technologies takes time, and the first results may not be visible until the next PlayStation console, probably the PS6, is released.
