On 16 January 2025, cinemas will start screening The Death of Putin, a provocative crime drama directed by Polish filmmaker Patryk Wiega. The film, co-produced by the United States, Poland and Malta, is a unique film project that combines artificial intelligence technologies with an analysis of historical events.

What is unique about the film?

The film invites viewers to explore the life of one of the most famous dictators of our time - from childhood to death. Through an in-depth study of his biography, the filmmakers try to show the motivation and psychological changes of the Russian leader.

To create a full-fledged image of the dictator, they used revolutionary AI technology. Due to the lack of high-quality footage in the public domain, it was impossible to use standard deepfake methods. Therefore, the team developed a special algorithm capable of recreating the authentic look and facial expressions of the character based on available videos and photos.

How was the film created?

The film took almost two years to complete. The authors conducted extensive research of documents, including those related to the tragic events in Dubrovka and Beslan, as well as numerous war crimes during Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Artificial intelligence has become a key tool that has allowed the historical reconstruction to move to a new level.

Release and expectations

The film is expected to be released in 35 countries, including Ukraine, where it will be shown on the Planeta Kino network. The film's creators hope that the film will cause a wide response due to its sensitive subject matter and innovative approach to filmmaking.

"The Death of Putin is not only a film, but also an attempt to understand the absurdity of the policy of aggression and its consequences for the world through art. This is an example of how AI technologies can change cinema and open up new horizons for the realisation of complex historical images.
