Galaxy S24 and Fold 6 users in the US get access to satellite messaging feature
Some Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Fold 6 users have started to see a new satellite notification feature. This happened after the December 2024 security update was installed on devices connected to the T-Mobile network in the United States.
Here's What We Know
Prior to the Galaxy S24 announcement, there were rumours that the phone would receive a satellite communication feature for emergencies, but at the time of the launch, the smartphone did not have this feature. However, now some Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Fold 6 users on T-Mobile have started to notice a new option in the settings that allows them to use satellite networks.
This feature is only available to those users who have registered for the T-Mobile Starlink trial. This service uses Starlink technology to provide communications via satellites orbiting the Earth in low Earth orbit. Announced in August 2022, the service will soon begin beta testing.
The new Satellite Networks option has been added to the Connections section of the settings. It allows users to send and receive text messages even without a mobile network if they have direct access to satellites in the sky. However, there is a caveat that weather conditions, such as cloud cover, can affect the quality of the connection.
This feature should work with all LTE-enabled phones, but currently only certain models, including Samsung smartphones, support it in test mode. Once the beta testing is complete, it will be available for all current LTE devices.
