Forbes: problem with components solved - Germany speeds up delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine
Ukraine has faced significant delays in the delivery of most of the Western military equipment promised by partner countries as part of their support for the full-scale war unleashed by russia.
Germany is the second largest donor of military equipment after the US, but it too is delaying the transfer of promised Leopard tanks to Ukraine. However, Forbes reports that this problem has been resolved.
Here's What We Know
Forbes military columnist David Axe reported that after two years of serious problems with the supply of components for the repair of Leopard 1 and 2 tanks for their subsequent transfer to the Ukrainian Defence Forces, the German side found suppliers and was able to establish an accelerated process of restoration and modernization of equipment.
The author of the material has information that in September Ukraine received 58 out of 155 promised Leopard 1A5 tanks, while for 2022-23 Germany transferred only 45 vehicles.
According to David Axe, the combat vehicles are already on the most difficult parts of the front and the fighters are satisfied with the way the German equipment shows itself.
If Germany is able to fulfil its commitments, the Leopard will become the largest tank in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Forbes mentions that Ukraine currently has 104 new Leopard 2s, 80 M-1 Abrams and 14 British Challenger 2s in service.
Importantly, Ukrainian engineers are further modernising the German tanks by installing dynamic protection units on them, which makes it possible to compensate for the Leopard's main disadvantage - thin armour. Thanks in large part to this, only six of the 58 Leopard 1s received by Ukraine between July 2023 and early September 2024 have been confirmed destroyed.
