President-elect Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to suspend the ban on TikTok so his administration can find a political solution to the problem after taking office.

Here's What We Know

Trump claims he has unique deal-making expertise and the political will to negotiate that could save the platform. A law passed by Congress requires Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US company by 19 January 2025 or the platform will be banned. The Supreme Court recently agreed on 10 January to hear arguments that the law violates the First Amendment.

Trump, who previously supported banning TikTok, changed his stance after successfully using the platform in his 2024 election campaign. He met with TikTok CEO Shou Chew and said it "might be worth keeping the platform for a while." Trump is asking the Supreme Court to suspend the 19 January deadline so his administration can find a political solution to the problem.
