Contraband will not be cancelled: Avalanche Studios has reached a major milestone in the development of the ambitious action game
In 2021 Avalanche studio - the author of Just Cause series and post-apocalyptic action Mad Max (2015) - in cooperation with Xbox Game Studios announced an ambitious co-operative game Contraband.
It was stated that it would be an open-world project, and the main gameplay mechanics would be controlling a variety of vehicles to deliver contraband.
Since then, except for the colourful but abstract announcement trailer, the developers have not revealed any details, but insiders assured that "Insider: Contraband action game from the creators of Just Cause and Rage 2 won't be released until the end of 2025 at the earliest" and it may be cancelled at all.
Here's What We Know
Reputable insider and Windows Central editor Jez Corden shared new information about Contraband on The Xbox Two podcast. According to him, the threat of cancellation of the game set in the 70s setting is no longer looming, as Avalanche has finally managed to make important progress in development.
Corden emphasised that some elements of Contraband have been revised or significantly changed to make the game more interesting and more intense, so it is not a fact that the gameplay will consist only of driving cars, perhaps other mechanics will appear in the action game.
In any case, the matter has moved on and Avalanche may soon present new Contraband content.
The game was positioned as an Xbox Series and PC exclusive in 2021, but given Microsoft's new strategy, Contraband may well come to PlayStation 5. The action game will be available immediately on Game Pass.
