Top 5 automakers with the most recalls in the U.S. in 2024
In 2024, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recorded more than 1,052 vehicle recall campaigns. And 10 Leading automakers are responsible for about a third of them. The number of "affected vehicles" includes models with multiple recalls. For example, Ford initiated seven separate recalls for the Maverick this year alone, so it is counted multiple times in the manufacturer's total number of recalled vehicles.
The top five "leaders" in terms of the number of such initiatives are as follows:
- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Stellantis): 72 recall campaigns
4,804,287 vehicles recalled. - Ford Motor Company: 63 recall campaigns
4,382,095 vehicles recalled. - BMW: 36 recalls
1,832,968 vehicles recalled. - General Motors: 33 recalls
1,832,968 vehicles recalled - Mercedes-Benz: 27 recalls
409,751 vehicles recalled
From a car owner's perspective, a recall notice is uncomfortable and the ideal situation would be to avoid having to deal with these repairs altogether. However, recall campaigns are a good thing as they are aimed at fixing any problems that may arise due to the manufacturer's fault.
Under U.S. law, automakers are required by law to fix any safety issues with their products. What's worse is when they either take too long to fix the problem or do nothing at all - especially when it comes to potentially dangerous defects.
