Samsung and Apple are competitors in the premium smartphone market, but at the same time, Samsung supplies the components that make iPhones popular.

Here's What We Know

For example, Samsung Display is the main supplier of OLED screens for iPhones and will soon become a key supplier for the OLED screens of future MacBooks.

Samsung also makes sensors for cameras, and while Apple has been using Sony sensors for years, rumours suggest that the company may turn to Samsung if its sensors improve the iPhone's photographic capabilities. And this is quite possible.

Insiders report that Samsung is developing a new sensor for Apple that will use a special design of three chips stacked on top of each other. This sensor could be much better than Sony's current Exmor RS sensors and become the main camera sensor in the upcoming iPhone.

Sony has been the main supplier of sensors for the iPhone for many years, but now Samsung may take over this niche. Analysts believe that the iPhone 18 may already feature a 48-megapixel Samsung sensor. Moreover, there are rumours that Apple may use several Samsung sensors in future models.

What makes this sensor special? The data processing chips are stacked on top of each other at the back of the sensor. This allows for faster image processing and improved image quality because the pixels travel a shorter distance.

This sensor could significantly improve the photography capabilities of the new iPhone models. And while rumours of Samsung's sensor being used in the iPhone 16 didn't materialise, it's possible that the technology will be featured in the iPhone 18 in 2026.
