Goodbye Dolby Atmos? Samsung and Google introduce Eclipsa Audio's proprietary spatial sound technology
Samsung and Google have announced the launch of Eclipsa, a new spatial audio format that will be available on Samsung 2025 TVs and soundbars.
Here's What We Know
This format will allow 3D audio to be used in some YouTube videos, creating a more realistic and immersive audio experience. Eclipsa Audio will be a free alternative to Dolby Atmos, for the licence of which equipment manufacturers pay significant sums. The new format supports customisation of audio data such as the location and intensity of sounds, as well as spatial reflections, to create a 3D sound.
The partnership between Samsung and Google began in 2023, and at the time the technology was called Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF). Since then, they have been working on an open source platform for 3D sound. Eclipsa Audio support is expected to be available on all Samsung 2025 TV models, including Crystal UHD and Neo QLED 8K.
The companies are also creating a certification programme with the Telecommunications Technology Association to ensure consistent audio quality across all devices using the format.
More details on the new format will be revealed at CES 2025.
