Rumour: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 and Dimensity 9500 chips could equal Apple's M4 chip in single-core performance
According to the latest rumours from whistleblower DCS, Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 processors could equal Apple's M4 chip in terms of single-core performance. This will be possible thanks to the use of ARM's Scalable Matrix Extension (SME) technology and TSMC's improved 3nm N3P process.
Here's What We Know
Apple has long held the lead in single-core performance, which gave its devices high responsiveness and efficiency in single-threaded tasks. However, with new chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek, that could change.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 will reportedly have performance cores clocked up to 5.00GHz, while the Dimensity 9500 cores will reach 4.00GHz. These chipsets will also support SME, which will allow them to handle demanding workloads more efficiently. Performance and power efficiency should also be improved by TSMC's latest 3nm N3P process, which will also be used in Apple's new A19 chip.
While this data remains at the rumour level for now, it is of great interest. If Qualcomm and MediaTek manage to achieve the claimed figures, it could mean the emergence of higher-performance Android smartphones, which will be a serious challenge for Apple.
