Mazda Motor Corporation announced on Monday, 6 January, plans to build a new battery module plant in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The plant will produce cylindrical lithium-ion battery modules and automotive-grade batteries supplied by Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd.

Here's What We Know

These batteries will be installed in Mazda's first battery electric vehicle developed on a specialised EV platform, which is also planned to be produced in Japan. The expected annual battery production capacity of the plant is 10 GWh. No other details have been announced yet.

Mazda and Panasonic co-operation

Mazda partnered with Panasonic Energy to supply cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in May 2023. In September 2024, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry certified a plan to expand battery production. Mazda said the new plant will contribute to local employment and economic development in the region.
