Eight years after the debut of its first proprietary chipset, the Surge S1, Xiaomi seems ready to try its hand at creating its own SoC again.

Here's What We Know

A leak indicates that the new chipset, codenamed "XRing", could be officially unveiled this year and will be the basis for Xiaomi's flagship 15S Pro smartphone.

A source from Xiaomitime reports that a reference to the development of a new Xiaomi chipset has been found in the Mi code. The chipset, codenamed "XRing", may be officially named Surge S2 and will be a direct successor to the Surge S1, which debuted in the Mi 5c smartphone in 2017.

Although exact technical details are still scarce, leaks indicate that the Surge S2 will be manufactured on a 3nm process based on TSMC's N3E process. The chipset is expected to feature one high-performance Cortex-X3 core, three Cortex-A715 cores, four Cortex-A510 cores, and an Imagination CXT-48-1536 GPU. For communication, it is planned to use a MediaTek modem, presumably T90 5G.

This year, Xiaomi is likely to limit the use of Surge S2 to only a few models due to the risks associated with the new technology. However, Xiaomi 15S Pro, known by the codename "dijun" and model number "25042PN24C", is likely to be the first smartphone to receive the new chipset.

This could be a major step for Xiaomi towards technological independence and competition in the flagship market.

Xiaomi recently introduced a new lightweight 4G radio, the Public Network Intercom Mini, with a range of up to 5000 km.
