Aptera unveiled a production-ready solar electric vehicle at CES 2025
Aptera has unveiled a production-ready version of its long-awaited three-wheeled electric car. It's been four years since the car was first unveiled as a concept and more than two years since production was originally planned to begin. Now, the company says the car is "poised to redefine the future of mobility."
Here's What We Know
The design of the production model is much the same as the original concept, meaning this vehicle still looks more like a spaceship than a conventional electric car. The car's aerodynamics were perfected in Pininfarina's wind tunnel in Turin, Italy. Aperta claims its drop-top car has one of the lowest coefficients of aerodynamic drag of any production passenger car, but has not yet released exact figures.
Much of the bodywork is covered with solar panels. Aptera claims that drivers will be able to enjoy daily use without having to plug into a charger. On a sunny day, a car parked outside a house can generate enough electricity to drive 40 miles (64 kilometres). When the 42 kWh battery is fully charged, it can travel up to 400 miles (644 kilometres). Other technical details, including power and dynamic parameters, are still being kept under wraps.
As of November 2024, 50,000 pre-orders have been received for the Aptera car. Details on pricing and when customer deliveries will begin have not yet been specified, but the company's website indicates that prices will range from $25,900 to around $46,000.
