At the end of 2024, unidentified drones were observed over the Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, but were not shot down or intercepted. This was reported by the Ministry of the Interior of this federal state and sources of the Bild tabloid.

Here's What We Know

Before Christmas, there was a massive invasion of drones in the region, some of which were probably flying near military installations. In particular, the Rhineland-Palatinate is home to the US Ramstein airbase, which has also been spotted near unidentified drones in the past.

According to sources, some of the drones were "the size of a car". In total, in 2024, police received about 100 reports of airspace violations by unknown drones.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Rhineland-Palatinate warns of the growing use of large drones to spy on important targets and considers these actions part of Russia's hybrid war. The ministry stressed the need to introduce technologies for early detection and combating such threats.

Earlier, similar incidents were reported in the UK. In particular, on 24 November 2024, drones were spotted over three Royal Air Force bases in Suffolk and Norfolk.
