At CES 2025, Samsung Display held a limited showing of a microLED display for smartwatches.

Here's What We Know

The Korean giant has developed a screen with a peak brightness of 4000 nit. To make this figure clear, we note that the brightest display among smartwatches at the moment is the Apple Watch Ultra 2 with an indicator of 3000 nit. Thus, the screen from Samsung will be one third brighter than that of the American developer!

Such microLED-matrix will provide users with two advantages:

  1. The screen will be perfectly visible even in the sunniest weather and other unusual conditions
  2. The watch can be used for backlighting without the need to activate the built-in LED torch.

Importantly, compared to OLED, microLED consumes less power, has better colour reproduction and a longer lifespan as the pixels are protected from burn-in.

Samsung Display has not yet revealed when mass production of microLED watches will start and which manufacturers will install it in their gadgets.
