Chinese social networking app RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, has become the most popular app in the US Apple App Store amid the impending TikTok ban.

Here's What We Know

The app offers users a combination of images, short videos and text posts, which has attracted many US users who call themselves "TikTok refugees". They are looking for a new community because of a possible TikTok ban and are actively engaging with Chinese users, asking questions about popular memes and other cultural aspects.

RedNote, launched in 2013 as a shopping app, now has more than 300 million monthly active users and surpassed $1 billion in revenue last year. The US Supreme Court is considering banning TikTok and a decision is expected by 19 January. TikTok users can switch to RedNote, but the ban could also affect that app as it is owned by Xingyin Information Technology, which has direct ties to the Chinese government.
