Apple has officially stopped signing iOS 18.2, which means that iPhone users who have updated their devices to iOS 18.2.1 will no longer be able to revert to iOS 18.2.

Here's What We Know

The iOS 18.2.1 update was released in early January.

Usually, after releasing new versions of iOS, Apple stops subscribing to the previous ones after a few weeks. This means that it will not be possible to install an unsigned version on a device, as it will not be verified on the server.

This restriction helps Apple to ensure that users have access to the latest updates, including security improvements and bug fixes. At the same time, it also reduces the possibility of using older versions of software that may be less secure.

The iOS 18.2.1 update included unknown bug fixes, while the now unrecoverable iOS 18.2 version released in December brought new Apple Intelligence capabilities.

The main features of iOS 18.2 are

  • Genmoji: Users can create personalised emoticons using artificial intelligence that can be used in group chats and shared with other users, including owners of Android devices.
  • Image Playground: A tool for generating images based on text descriptions or existing photos. Users can create unique images in different styles, such as animation, illustration or sketch.
  • ChatGPT integration with Siri: Siri now supports integration with ChatGPT, allowing for more detailed and contextualised responses to queries without the need for authorisation.
  • Visual Intelligence: A feature that allows iPhone 16 and later models to identify objects that the camera is pointing at, with the option to view the results via ChatGPT or Google Search.
  • Update to the Mail app: The redesign of the Mail app allows users to sort emails into categories such as Primary, Transactions, and Promotions. Users can manually re-categorise emails for more accurate sorting in the future.
  • Improvements in the Photos app: Improved video viewing and the ability to return to the preview with a gesture. A new Cleanup feature has been added to remove unwanted objects from photos.
  • Improvements in Safari: New background images and a file download feature that shows the process on Dynamic Island and the Home screen. Added the ability to export and import browsing history and data from other apps.
