Iran unveils first indigenous reconnaissance ship
Iran unveiled the first Zagros (313) reconnaissance ship, designed and built by the local defence industry. The ship is positioned as a reconnaissance destroyer based on the Mowj project, although its dimensions and armament are closer to light frigates or corvettes.
Here's What We Know
The ship has already been officially commissioned into the Iranian Navy, but the exact date of this event has not been disclosed. According to the declared characteristics, the vessel's displacement is 1700 tonnes, length is 94.5 m, and width is 11.1 m. Most likely, these parameters have been retained from the basic Mowj design.
The released video shows that the ship is unarmed, but is equipped with protective domes for all-round antennas. Information about the details of the reconnaissance equipment and technical equipment is not disclosed. The ship has a helicopter deck large enough to accommodate Bell 212 (AB-212) helicopters, as well as a hangar, which was absent in the combat version of the Mowj project ships.
The previous warship of this project, Deylaman (78), was commissioned into the Iranian Navy on 27 November 2023 in the port city of Bandar Anzali. It is equipped with a 76mm Fajr-27 gun, which is an unlicensed copy of the Italian OTO Melara, a 30mm Kamand gun to defend against low-altitude air targets, and other weapons.
Air defence includes the Mehrab air defence system and Sayyad-3 missiles with a range of up to 150 km, while anti-ship weapons include eight subsonic Qader missiles with a range of about 200 km.
