A study of the African gaming industry has shown that 90% of its revenue comes from mobile games. In 2024, 66 studios and 55 indie developers joined the Africa Game Developer Survey, which is 42% more than last year. Interestingly, 92% of respondents were under the age of 34, and only 12% of them were women.

Here's What We Know

The South African market leads the way in terms of revenue, earning more than $110 million from 2020 to 2023. The total market is expected to grow to $333 million by 2026, driven mainly by mobile gaming and eSports.

The Nigerian gaming market, supported by a young and tech-savvy population, generated $249 million in 2021, while Kenya earned $46 million in the same year, focusing on mobile games and educational AR and VR projects.

Despite challenges such as limited funding and access to international markets, the industry is showing positive momentum.
