Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Android 16 that will allow you to run three apps in split-screen mode. This feature will probably only be available on tablets due to their larger screen size.

Here's What We Know

The second developer preview of Android 16 hints at a major update to split-screen mode, Android Authority reports. Android 16 may feature a multitasking system inspired by OnePlus' Open Canvas feature, which first appeared in the OnePlus Open, the company's first foldable, book-style smartphone.

Open Canvas allows up to three apps to run simultaneously, with two apps sharing 90 per cent of the screen and the third taking up the remaining 10 per cent. The genius of this implementation is that while the third app is usually too small to use, it can be quickly enlarged by tapping anywhere in the app window.

Since Open Canvas is exclusive to OnePlus devices, it's not available on other Android tablets. Google appears to be working on its own version of the feature, which could debut in Android 16. According to Android Authority, Google's new split-screen feature is still under development and it's difficult to test it yet.

However, if development of three-way multitasking is already underway, it's highly likely that it could be seen in many tablets and foldable smartphones that will receive Android 16.
