The European Commission (EC) has requested information from Ilon Musk about the algorithms that determine the content recommended to users on the X platform.

Here's What We Know

The EC is keen to find out how these algorithms comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes key obligations on online platforms operating in the EU. As Germany prepares for federal elections in February, the German government has accused Musk of trying to influence the election in favour of the far-right AfD party. However, according to the Financial Times, the EC's latest enquiry is not directly related to this.

The request expands an existing investigation into X's activities that began in 2023. The EC now requires X to provide internal documentation about its recommendation systems and any recent changes made to them. A withholding order has also been issued requiring X to keep records of all future changes until the end of 2025.

The EC also requested access to some of X's commercial APIs and technical interfaces.
