Xiaomi has revised the bootloader unlocking process, tightening the rules to improve security and reduce the popularity of custom firmware.

Here's What We Know

The new rules, which come into effect on 1 January 2025, include stricter deadlines, single-device limits, and a complicated approval process. Users must now complete the entire unlock process on a single device within 14 days. If this window is missed, the approval is cancelled and cannot be renewed. The number of devices that can be unlocked has also changed: it's now only one device per Xiaomi account.

The application process has become more demanding, including a complex test and identity verification. Abuse of permissions can lead to account lockout or legal consequences. Xiaomi emphasises that unlocking the bootloader may expose devices to security vulnerabilities and is not recommended for regular users. These measures are aimed at improving security and control of devices after unlocking.
