After the US Supreme Court upheld a ban on TikTok unless it is sold to a private US investor, the company has independently decided to cease operations in the country from Sunday, 19 January.

Here's What We Know

In an official statement, TikTok cited political uncertainty as the main reason for shutting down its service in the US. The statement also criticised the Biden administration for not making a final decision on the issue and the future of TikTok in the country. The company fears that a future Trump administration may take similar measures, so it feels it is necessary to shut down.

TikTok is trying to show its users what will happen in the event of a lockdown and is putting pressure on public opinion. The company's concerns are not unfounded, as President-elect Donald Trump has not spoken clearly about his plans for TikTok, which creates further uncertainty for the company.
