Seagate, one of the leading storage manufacturers, has unveiled a new 36TB hard drive, which is a record-breaking capacity.

Here's What We Know

This Exos M Series product comes shortly after the company's previous record-breaking 32TB hard drive, introduced in December 2024. The new Exos M hard drives are designed primarily for data centres and hyperscalers like Microsoft and Amazon, so you're unlikely to find them at retail.

By using HAMR technology, Seagate has been able to reduce the cost of storage by 25% per terabyte, making these hard drives more competitive with SSDs. The new 36TB Exos M hard drive features 10 platters to achieve high storage density.

While competitors such as Western Digital and Toshiba offer lower-capacity hard drives with more platters, Seagate continues to lead the segment. The company has also announced plans to achieve 10TB capacity per wafer in the future, further strengthening its position in the market.
