Nissan Motor has decided not to produce in the US a compact electric crossover codenamed PZ1L, which was to be placed between the Leaf and Rogue models. However, production of this model for other markets is still planned at the plant in Sunderland, UK, reported Automotive News citing a source in the Japanese company.

Here's What We Know

The decision to cancel production of the promising model in the US is due to the company's desire to focus on other electric crossovers to be produced in the US at Nissan's Mississippi plant. Nissan spokesman, Brian Brockman, said that these models better meet the needs of the U.S. market and have a higher sales potential.

In addition, the slower-than-expected pace of electric vehicle adoption and political uncertainty, particularly President Trump's promises to repeal the Green New Deal and electric vehicle tax credits, may have influenced the decision. Thus, Nissan is reviewing its electrification strategy, adapting to market conditions and political changes to ensure competitiveness and alignment with consumer needs.

Nissan was one of the first manufacturers to begin mass production of electric vehicles with the Leaf model. However, only two of the brand's electric models are currently available in the US - the second-generation Leaf and the Ariya. Prices for these electric cars start at $28,140 and $39,770.
