In recent weeks, AI leaders have called on the US to support local companies to keep up with China. OpenAI and SoftBank are investing $19 billion each in the Stargate project.

Here's What We Know

Stargate is a large-scale project aimed at building data centre infrastructure in the United States, which will help to significantly accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in the country.

The project also envisages the construction of power plants to meet the energy needs of these centres, which will avoid possible power outages. In addition, Google is already investing in the construction of wind farms to supply its data centres with energy and will transfer part of it to the national electricity grid. It is not yet known whether Stargate plans to follow the same principle.

According to The Information, OpenAI and SoftBank are to jointly invest $19 billion in this project. This will be an important component of supporting local companies in the face of global competition. The source quoted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as saying that the two companies could own up to 40% of the Stargate project.

The Stargate project began construction of its data centres in 2024. US President Donald Trump noted the importance of this investment, calling it "a testament to America's potential". SoftBank's Masayoshi Son, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Oracle's Larry Ellison consider this project "the most important of our era."

Stargate has already built ten large data centres and plans to develop digital healthcare, in particular for the treatment of serious diseases such as cancer.
