One of the main features of Assassin's Creed Shadows is the presence of two equal protagonists in the game - a samurai of African descent Yasuke and a shinobi girl Naoe. In this respect, the action game in the setting of feudal Japan is reminiscent of Assassin's Creed Syndicate (2015), but it turned out that initially Ubisoft did not plan to return to such a concept.

Here's What We Know

Assassin's Creed Shadows game director Jonathan Dumont gave an interview to PC Gamer in which he revealed that only one character was originally planned for the game. It's not known who this protagonist was, but he had to be equally adept at open combat and excellent at stealth, so the gameplay for him would be reminiscent of Ghost of Tsushima. For the sake of realism, the developers wanted players to have to put heavy armour on their character before major battles, but they later found this system too cumbersome and clunky.

Next, the team tried to implement a character development mechanic where the player could choose which style he was more interested in, but this plan seemed unsatisfactory. In the end, after long discussions, Ubisoft came up with the idea of two protagonists, between which gamers will be able to switch almost at any moment and choose the one who seems more preferable to them in each particular situation.

Since the first critics' reviews of Assassin's Creed Shadows have already appeared online and they turned out to be positive, we can expect that the French company made the right decision.

When We Can Expect It

Assassinʼs Creed Shadows will be released on the 20th of March on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
