EcoFlow is planning to introduce payment for certain software functions of its devices. Previously, all smart features were available free of charge after purchasing the product, but now you will have to pay extra for some of the functions.

Here's What We Know

EcoFlow is a leading manufacturer of portable power plants, batteries and other energy solutions for convenient and autonomous use.

EcoFlow confirmed its intentions in a commentary to the German publication Appgefahren. The company's app will feature features marked with a golden diamond to indicate their premium status. The cost of these features is already partially known: for example, intelligent power management will cost from €3.99 (≈$4.19). The ability to use the feature across multiple devices could cost users up to €70 (≈$74).

EcoFlow has indicated that current product owners will not have to pay extra, but that paid features may appear in future products. No specific details have been disclosed regarding the subscription period or the full list of paid features.

This decision has caused controversy. On the one hand, the introduction of paid access to smart features may provide companies with additional resources for innovation. On the other hand, it risks reducing the loyalty of consumers who expect full functionality at no extra cost after purchasing a device.

Only time will tell how the market will react to this change. However, one thing is clear: EcoFlow's new approach could have an impact on the future of the backup power solutions market.
