Chinese startup DeepSeek, which recently became the number one free app in the Apple App Store among artificial intelligence assistants, has faced a wave of cyberattacks. This came shortly after the app overtook ChatGPT in popularity and after big companies like NVIDIA started losing billions of dollars. As a result of the attacks, the company was forced to temporarily suspend new user registrations to bring the situation under control.

Here's What We Know

DeepSeek, founded in 2023, released its R1 model, which has gained popularity, just a week ago. This model can perform on par with OpenAI's latest o1 reasoning model, which has a subscription of $200 per month. China's DeepSeek R1, on the other hand, is available for free.

The startup's popularity has caused a significant drop in the valuation of NVIDIA, which lost $384bn in just a few hours. And this is against the backdrop of China looking to invest 1 trillion yuan in developing its artificial intelligence industry. OpenAI and Google are also likely under immense pressure due to DeepSeek's surge in popularity, which has shaken their AI dominance.

The company released a statement assuring that already registered users can continue to use the service without interruption, while new user registrations are on hold for now.

As of now, there is no information about who attacked DeepSeek and for what purpose, but the story is developing....
