Phoenix Labs lays off most employees - this is the 4th wave of layoffs since May 2023

Phoenix Labs, the developer of Dauntless and Fae Farm games, has announced significant staff reductions, laying off most of its employees as part of "necessary operational changes". This is the fourth wave of layoffs in the company since May 2023.
Here's What We Know
Phoenix Labs, known for its Dauntless and Fae Farm projects, has faced a number of challenges since being acquired by blockchain company Forte Labs in 2023. The first layoffs occurred in May 2023, when 9% of the staff was fired. The next waves of layoffs followed seven months later, when another 34 employees were laid off, and in May 2024, an additional 140 employees were laid off.
In a post on LinkedIn , the company said: "Today is another difficult day at Phoenix Labs. We have made the difficult decision to part ways with the majority of the studio as part of the necessary changes to our operations." The studio expressed its gratitude to all affected employees for their contributions and encouraged other companies to consider these talented professionals.
Regarding the future of Dauntless and Fae Farm, Phoenix Labs promised to provide additional information in the coming weeks, noting that their priority is to support the laid-off employees during this transition.
These developments come amidst general trends in the gaming industry, which saw around 14,000 jobs lost in 2024. January 2025 was also marked by further layoffs and studio closures, with Ubisoft announcing 185 staff redundancies and the closure of its Leamington office.
