Hyundai rethinks the rickshaw: the carmaker revealed electric three- and four-wheeled concepts for India
Hyundai has unveiled concept electric three- and four-wheelers that could complement or replace traditional Indian rickshaws. These models are designed to cater to the needs of the last mile market in India and could go into production in the future.
Here's What We Know
The electric three-wheeler concept has a retro-modern design and features a height-adjustable cab to adapt to monsoon and flooded road conditions. The front end has a steeply sloped windscreen, small LED headlamps and a screen for displaying messages. Large wheels, a tow hook and a comfortable seat for the driver complete the design. Hyundai is also exploring the use of a heat-shielding roof covering and waterproof materials for the interior.
The four-wheeled concept with four doors duplicates the main features of the three-wheeled version, but has an additional front seat. Hyundai plans to partner with TVS Motor Company to produce the three-wheeler in India, while the four-wheeler variant could be targeted at global markets. Powertrain specifications are yet to be disclosed.
According to SangYup Lee, executive vice president and global design head of Hyundai and Genesis, the company aims to create micro-mobility solutions tailored to India's unique conditions, reimagining the iconic three-wheeled rickshaw to enhance the user experience through thoughtful design.
